Most homeowners never think about what's under their shingles. And honestly, that's fine - that's our job. But here's the thing: the layer underneath is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It's the backup barrier between your home and whatever weather rolls in.
We use cap nails when we install underlayment. Not staples, not standard roofing nails - cap nails. They have a wide plastic or metal disc head that holds the underlayment flat and tight against the deck. That means no lifting, no gaps, no wind getting underneath and peeling things back. It's a small choice that makes a big difference over the life of the roof.
A lot of crews skip this step or cut corners because the shingles go on top and nobody sees it anyway. That's exactly the wrong way to think about it. The underlayment is your roof's first line of defense if a shingle ever cracks, blows off, or lets water in. If the underlayment is sloppy underneath, you've got a problem waiting to happen.
We do roof repairs and maintenance the same way we'd do a full installation - with the same attention to what's underneath as what's on top. Whether we're doing a full roof inspection or patching a specific area, the prep work gets done right. Every time. Because that's what actually protects your home long-term.
