Ice dams are one of the most underrated threats to a roof. When snow melts and refreezes along the eaves, it backs water up under your shingles - and that's when the real damage starts. Leaks, rotted decking, ruined insulation. It's the kind of problem that sneaks up on you mid-winter when there's nothing you can do about it.
That's exactly what we were trying to prevent here. We installed HeatTape Pro along the roofline eaves of this home, running the cable in that classic zigzag pattern across the lower edge of the roof. That layout is intentional - it keeps a clear path for meltwater to escape instead of pooling and freezing. The cable ties into a proper outdoor-rated connection point right at the roof surface, keeping everything clean and secure.
Heat tape works by generating just enough warmth along the most vulnerable part of your roof to stop ice from building up in the first place. It's not running all the time - most systems are either thermostat-controlled or self-regulating, so they only kick on when temperatures drop to the range where ice formation becomes a real risk. Smart, targeted protection.
This kind of preventive maintenance fits right in with the roof maintenance work we do. A solid inspection, clearing any debris off the surface, and adding protection like heat tape - done before the cold sets in - is a whole lot cheaper than dealing with water damage in January. Getting ahead of it now is the move.
