Minnesota roofs face a combination of snow, freeze-thaw cycles, wind-driven rain, and ice
dams. That's why a quality roof replacement involves more than choosing shingles. One of the
most important hidden components is ice and water shield.

What does ice and water shield actually do?

Ice and water shield is a self-adhering roofing membrane installed directly over appropriate
roof decking in vulnerable areas. It provides a secondary water barrier if water gets beneath
the shingles. Unlike ordinary underlayment, many ice-barrier products are formulated to seal
around fasteners when installed correctly.

This membrane doesn't stop an ice dam from forming. Instead, it helps protect the roof deck if
meltwater backs up under the roofing material.

Where should it be installed?

Common locations include roof eaves, valleys, and critical penetrations such as skylights and
chimneys. Exact placement depends on the roof design, the product, manufacturer directions,
and applicable local code. In Minnesota, eave protection is particularly important because an
ice dam can drive water uphill beneath shingles.

A homeowner should ask where the contractor plans to install ice barrier and how far that
protection extends into the conditioned portion of the building. An estimate that simply says
'underlayment included' may not answer that question.

Is more always better?

Not necessarily.

A high-performing roof requires the right combination of decking,
underlayment, ventilation, insulation, and exterior roofing. Covering a roof with an
impermeable membrane without evaluating the assembly can create moisture-management
concerns. The correct design depends on the building.

What should you ask your roofer?

Ask which membrane is specified, where it will be installed, how it will tie into flashing, and
whether the plan meets current local requirements. At Reliant Roofing, we believe those details
deserve as much attention as the shingle color. If you're replacing a roof in Central Minnesota,
contact our team to discuss the full roofing system, not just the visible finish.
