Standing Seam vs. Exposed-Fastener Metal Roofing: What Is the Difference?

Understand the key differences between standing seam and exposed-fastener metal roofing to make an informed decision for your project.

Not all metal roofs are built the same way. Two of the most common options, standing seam
and exposed-fastener steel panels, can look similar from a distance but use different
attachment and weatherproofing methods.

Standing seam roofing
Standing-seam panels connect with raised seams that typically conceal most primary panel
fasteners. Properly designed systems accommodate metal movement and can create a clean,
modern appearance. Performance depends on panel profile, clips, substrate, flashing, and
detailing.

Exposed-fastener panels
These panels are fastened through the metal using screws with sealing washers. They're
frequently used on outbuildings, agricultural structures, and some residential projects.
Installation can be more economical, but exposed fasteners and washers deserve periodic
inspection and maintenance.

Which one is better?

There is no universal answer. Roof pitch, building use, appearance goals, budget, snow control,
penetration details, and maintenance expectations all matter. A low-slope assembly also needs
to meet the specific panel manufacturer's minimum slope requirements.

Questions for your estimate

Ask about panel gauge, coating, fastening details, underlayment, trim, snow retention,
manufacturer requirements, and who handles future service. Cheap materials combined with
poor flashing are not a bargain.
