Can You Replace a Roof Without Removing the Old Shingles?

Learn when it's feasible to add shingles over old ones or if a full tear-off is necessary for optimal roofing results.

Adding new shingles over old ones may sound like an easy way to reduce cost and avoid a
messy tear-off. But it isn't appropriate for every roof, and it can hide problems that should be
corrected first.

What is a roof overlay?

An overlay means installing new asphalt shingles over an existing shingle layer where
permitted by code and manufacturer requirements. It may reduce immediate tear-off labor
and disposal costs, but the existing roof still affects the new system.

What are the drawbacks?
An overlay can make it harder to inspect roof decking and resolve concealed damage. Uneven
old shingles can affect the finished appearance. Flashing heights, roof edges, ventilation, and
manufacturer warranty terms may also complicate the project.

When is tear-off the better choice?
If the existing roof is deteriorated, wet, uneven, or has multiple layers, or the local code or
product instructions require removal, tear-off is the appropriate approach. Removing the
covering lets the contractor evaluate decking and install the new system over a properly
prepared substrate

.
Will a second layer be cheaper long term?
Not always. Upfront savings can be offset by shorter useful life, missed repairs, or higher
future removal costs. Ask for written comparisons rather than assuming overlay is the best
value.

At Reliant Roofing, we generally prefer a scope that allows the underlying roof to be properly
evaluated. Our recommendation depends on your actual roof, local requirements, and the
selected roofing system.
